Katsucon 2014 ~ All the Cosplays

Well, the downside of this year’s Katsu is I missed the window to apply for an Artist Alley table. The good news is, this meant I had time to roam in cosplay, get pictures of other people’s, and get pictures of mine! The mine ones will be forthcoming, but for now I have photos of several others I caught along the way.

You know the deal: if you see your picture, grab your picture. If you’d like a link back to a page of some sort under your picture, leave a comment and it shall be done. ♥

Now, onward!

There’s more to come — LOTS more to come. I did three photoshoots of my own, went to a giant Doctor Who gathering, and did a mini-shoot with two cool dudes that was … yeah, MORE Doctor Who stuff.

Stay tuned for all that, because more photos will be rolling in bit by bit.

Virginia Air & Space Center Sci-Fi Fest

Ooh, there’s a lot to catch up on, isn’t there?  I had a convention about a week ago, I’ve got two more coming up in August, not to mention photoshoots and new costumes and … well, we’ve gotta start somewhere.

So, about a month ago, Luna-C was invited to appear at the Virginia Air & Space Center’s Sci-Fi Fest, set up to coincide with the opening weekend of Star Trek Into Darkness.  While I didn’t stay for the movie (I have issues with IMAX), I had a look at the different exhibits and stuck around to see Dr. Madblood and judge the costume contest.

Unfortunately, being in the show means I don’t have much by way of pictures. Suffice to say we had our own dressing room.

Things actually went really well, all told and even with our rather small cast (grand total of six if you include Cyne on sound).  In all seriousness, it was one of the best ‘feeling’ shows I’ve done in a while. I’d been having one hell of a week or two and I got some amazing energy off this show.

I’m hoping that if this becomes a regular thing, they’ll call us back again next year.

Luna-C will be at Shore Leave next, so expect to hear more. In the meantime, I’ll be gearing up to post a bunch of Anime Mid-Atlantic stuff, so be ready!

MarsCon 2013 ~ Out and About

MarsCon was crazy-busy this year for a variety of reasons.  Well, for one thing (as always), Luna-C was performing, but more on that in a later entry.  I also spent a lot of time at my Artist Alley table, made sales, met lovely people, saw lovely costumes … and because of my long walks between there and panel rooms, I got to run into a lot of rather neat costumes.  And weird sights in general.  So even though I don’t have anything new of my own to show, I’m more than happy to show off the creations of others.

So behold, Part One of my three-part MarsCon photo dump:

Katsucon 18 ~ Everyone else’s amazing cosplay.

Well, Katsucon was massive this year, and that was likely to do with the presence of the World Cosplay Summit.   Then again, Katsu’s been growing pretty consistently … but there was an excess of 12.5K in attendance, to the point that a friend of mine actually had to run out and get more badges printed.

So, dang.  Thanks for the awesome turnout.

Now, I did get a couple photoshoots done courtesy of the awesome Paul Karpey, but I’ll be posting those at a later date.  First I’ve got a respectable number of pictures that actually have nothing to do with me.  Because seriously … the cosplay this last weekend was somewhere between stunning and bizarre.  Stunzarring.  Clearly.

First off, though … if you’ve never been to the Gaylord National Harbor, find an excuse to.  It’s enormous, with gorgeous rooms and a small village on the bottom floor.  We call it ‘Macross City’ for a reason.

Nothing to see here, move along.

MarsCon 2012 ~ Bringing the Luna-C

Of course I didn’t forget about the Luna-C show!  But Katsucon prep has been a bother, mainly because I keep forgetting to do it.  Heigh-ho, if all goes well I won’t be pulling an all-nighter this year.

But that’s not the point for now.  Nope, the point for now is our magnificent Luna-C performance at MarsCon, with skits from just about everything.

First up, Cheri and Chris got some good use out of their Stormtrooper armour in this one-off of an Abbot and Costello skit.  This one was new, and they nailed it first time out.  It was hilarious to watch.

Your eyes do not deceive you; Chris is totally as tall as he looks.

We had a fewFireflyskits from the Browncoats shindig last year that we knew worked, so we brought those out.  This was a fun one with Obi-Wan Kenobi looking for a ship …

We love our Firefly skits, but that's okay because so does everyone else.

And then, with all the Ghostbusters talk of late, we had to make sure to ride that.  A ghost (an unexpectedly ‘friendly’ one) was loose in the MarsCon hotel.

The one on the right is Doc, not an official member of Luna-C but fantastic in this skit.

I had a walk-on as a con attendee. Nailed it.

Another Firefly skit next, and one of my favourites. Serenityhas a new shepherd, and he’s a bit friendly, too.  Likes the idea of handing out ‘blessings.’

This is a rewrite of an older skit, and I get to sit offstage and giggle at a good portion of it.

Michael as Father ... er ... Mike, actually.

We can’t do a show without at least one Doctor Who skit, so we brought out one we’ve been tinkering with — the Doctor explaining the birds and the bees to poor Rory.  I think I may have flubbed my lines a bit.

We had a sound cue mix-up that sort of threw us; I'd like to try this one again.

Next up was a BBC-version Sherlock skit that was a bit of a Cook/Moore throwback, but modernized with a fangirl blogger.

No offense, but I coulda done without the ad-libbed snipe at the Guy Ritchie flicks. Sorry, I believe in Love All The Sherlocks.

Another tweaked skit then … to ride the whole Breaking Dawn thing, we had Bella going in to give birth to little Renesme.  (I’m still learning stuff about that book — her name really is ‘Renesme’).  But just when the little girl starts going completely nuts, who should step in but yours truly as her soulmate.

Hi Mom.

The Spock/Yoda skit is one of my faves.  We have a “rotation” we do so we don’t end up doing skits back-to-back at the same cons each year.  I’m always glad to see this one show back up in rotation whenever we can use it.

Oldie and goodie, with a few reboot jokes tossed in.

I understand our ‘Outdoor Cooking with Hermione’ skit actually used to be a Xena skit, but that’s long before I came into the group.  It’s essentially just a string of bad puns — which is just the kind of skit I love.

A good slapstick finisher.

And that, as they say, is that.

De-deeen!

There were other skits, but not all of them had clear photos handy.  But if you come to a show, you’ll get the full effect.

Luna-C will be at Farpoint this coming weekend while I’m at Katsucon.  So if you opt for the former con instead of the latter, go have a look.  They’ll be back again (and I’ll actually show up) at RavenCon in April, so you will have many chances.

And if you’re at Katsu this weekend, swing by my table in Artist Alley!  It’s, er, a bit vaster than MarsCon, but hopefully you’ll be able to spot me.

Tidewater Browncoats’ ‘Can’t Stop the Serenity’ Big Damn Shindig!

On 11 June, Luna-C was invited to perform at the second annual Big Damn Shindig at the Naro Expanded Cinema, hosted by the Tidewater Browncoats.  The event raised money for Joss Whedon’s two favourite charities, Equality Now and The Samaritan House.  In addition to our performance at the front end of the afternoon, there were vendors, short films, and — the big entertainment of the day — big-screen showings of both Serenity and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

After expenses, CTST netted $947.50 for Equality Now and $353.50 for Samaritan House — down from last year, apparently, but still very impressive!  The turnout was great, and the crowd was very fun.  We’ve done Firefly skits at cons before, but we’ve never had a crowd that got every single joke in every single skit.  I’m still very flattered that I got to be a part of a performance at the Naro — I’ve been for both films and Rocky Horror shadow-casts, but have never performed there myself!

The show featured some new skits written specifically fir the event, as well as a handful I’ve mentioned on here.  I was, as usual, Kaylee.  And while there was a Browncoat there who put my Kaylee costume to shame (even had the parasol!), I like to think I went over at least all right enough for the show itself.

Keep your eyes on the Browncoats’ website, because there will be more updates coming soon on the event, including (I hope) photos and video!  They’ve also got another event or two in mind, including next year’s charity shindig and a possible fall showing of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust.  If you’re in the Hampton Roads area whenever they’ve got something on, be sure to swing by and show your support!
